You Never Die

“Every atom in your body has already been replaced. You didn’t notice. You didn’t stop being you.” – Mark Douglas, You Never Die

It makes you think more about “you are what you eat.” But that is another topic (kind of, but still – it applies here). While most of us believe and recognize we are flesh and blood, which does expire, we are more than just the physical stuff. Mark asks us what exactly that is.

Our habits and patterns can be changed when the brain is changed (injury, medication, ailment, etc). Science shows consciousness is basically wiped out under anesthesia, blocking the thalamus (sensory information) and cerebral cortex (decision making, feelings), along with your “internal clock”. We can measure the brainwaves to show activity under different conditions, and observe different behavior when the physical stuff or its conditions change – the structure and functioning, together. Meaning – it’s not just you’re made of, it’s also how it is put together.

Using examples from neuroscience and physics, he argues that our consciousness can be seen as a pattern – think of your habits, routines, perhaps “quirks” you are known for? And therefor, if we are patterns then theoretically a pattern can be replicated, repeated, and ultimately remain in play as long as the pattern persists.

Sure we may disrupt our own patterns, even on a daily basis. This book really made me think more about how we are all connected, what to expect next, and why the Golden Rule is truly in your best interest. He explains his position on all this in the Ixperiencit Theory framework.

If you would like to explore what it means to be “immortal” (…patterns continuing today – those we listen to regularly, watch on TV regularly, quote, refer to, and strive to emulate) take a listen to this audiobook. I hope you find it as thought provoking and interesting as I did.
